In anticipation of the release of the TW:Three Kingdoms, we decided to do an interview with one of the strongest players of modern TW: WARHAMMER. Our today's hero - famous and incredible winner of many tournaments TlaxtlanSoothsayer.
- First of all, can you explain what yours nickname means? How did you decide to choose it?
A: I played other Total War games as well, but used a different nickname. When I joined my first Warhammer tournament in TWW1, I changed my nickname to "Tlaxtlan Soothsayer", so people don't know it's me.
I expected to fail horribly. I actually got 2nd place. Since then I kept the new nickname.
The first part "Tlaxtlan" is a Lizardmen temple city. It's also known as the city of the moon. The second part "Soothsayer" is because Tlaxtlan is known for its lunamancers, astromancers, Slann and Skinks who can foretell the future. I chose this nickname, because I played Lizardmen in Warhammer Fantasy tabletop.
Thanks for such a detailed answer with LORE!

- Tell us about yourself a bit: name, age, occupation, residence, education etc. (optional question)
A: Glad that I can help. I have to say that I feel a bit strange to give an interview about video games. But I feel a bit honoured at the same time.
:Anyway, to answer the question: I'm from Bavaria in Germany. I grew up next to the beautiful Ammersee. I'm 27 years old and studied in Augsburg. (I'm not really keen on mentioning my real name or occupation.)
- How had you met Total War series? Which game was the first? And which Total War game was the best in your opinion? Why?
A: If I remember it correctly, I was told by friends about first Rome Total War. Rome was definitely the first Total War game I played.
The best Total War games are (in no particular order):
Medieval 2: The base game is already great, the Kingdoms expansion makes it even better. The amount of excellent mods makes it a masterpiece. For example Third Age, Stainlees Steel, Rage of the Dark Gods / Call of Warhammer.
Shogun 2: It simply has the best multiplayer experience of any historical game and I played thousands of battles in Shogun 2.
Warhammer 1 & Warhammer 2: a Total War game in the Warhammer universe made a dream come true for me. I love Total War games, I'm a big fan of Warhammer as well. TW:WH also has an excellent multiplayer with a broad variety of factions, units and strategies.
- Tell us, how you became a mp player? What was the first step?
A: I think the first steps in any multiplayer strategy games are probably Star Craft 1 and Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne (also played mods such as the original Dota Allstars mod for WC3, or tower defences and whatnot).
And I somehow remember that I played Battlefield 1942 with my older brother, but that was ages ago.
- and what was the first TW mp game? Was first experience successful?
A: Well, I don't really remember it, it was already some time ago after all. But I think I lost to a friend of mine, didn't stand much of a chance. It's just different than fighting the AI in singleplayer campaign.

- Which tournament was the first? Which was the most memorable? Why?
A: So my first Warhammer tournament was the Questing Cup in December 2016. I lost 2 : 3 in the finals.
(bracket: https://challonge.com/QuestingCup6 )
(timecode of finals: https://youtu.be/PTRW3ywue9U?t=17479 )
The most memorable one is probably the Everchosen Summer Invitational. It was unusually hot in Germany during this time. It was a quite brutal summer, really fucking hot, all day long, for weeks. I actually moved my computer from my work room to the cellar, because the heat was unbearable.

- Why, in your opinion, fast-cups (flash tournaments) are so popular in TWW multiplayer? Which format of tournaments do you like more?
A: I for one like flash tournaments better. Maybe some others share this opinion, too, although I can't be sure about that.
There are several reasons. You can spontaneously decide to particpate in a flash tournament. Usually it only occupies one day of your life time.
Other tournament formats often take weeks or months. And you always need to think about them: "When is the next match, who is my next opponent, when can I arrange some time to play the other players?"
Another reason might be that it's easier to stream and broadcast flash tournaments live on Twitch or Youtube. When I don't have enough time to play in tourneys, I like to spectate at least parts of live tournaments.
- Provocative question: Is there a balance in Warhammer? How can we decide if there is a balance for multiplayer? Was it increased or decreased when TWW2 went to public? What can we do with influence of counter-picks? Are counter-picks "good" or "evil" for multiplayer?
A: Is there balance in Warhammer. I would say: "Yes, absolutely."
At least when you ask me about Total War : Warhammer, the tabletop game is a different story and much less balanced.

That being said, the release of WH 1 was a broken mess. Do you remember magic missiles one-shotting lord? King Louen or Vampire Counts without healing cap? Demigryphs being the chicken knights of doom, able to kill almost everything?
The balance has improved over the lifecycle of WH1. Then new issues got introduced with WH2, there were some quite broken bugs and issues at release. Again the game got better over time.
The thing I would like to see from CA is to get more frequent patches, to fix bugs and issues. They already try to listen to feedback. But there aren't enough updates.
I would say that the balance in WH2 is considerably better than in WH1 and than in a lot of other multiplayer games nonetheless.
Counter-picks: in theory, at least in my opinion there shouldn't be any counter-picks in a perfectly balanced game.
But TW:WH has hundreds of match-ups, thousands of abilities, units, spells and whatnot. So you will always end up with some difficult or match-ups, some of them are barely possible to win against an equally skilled player.
That being said, there aren't that many "hard counter-picks" in this game as a lot of people pretend. Most match-ups are doable, although one player might be at a disadvantage, simply because of the choice of his faction.

- Which faction is your favourite in TWW? Is it because of lore or because of battle aspects?
A: Eeewww, not again this question. It's quite difficult to answer. :p
I like to play the majority of the factions. The vast amount of different playstyles and strategies makes Total War games interesting for me.
Lizardmen will always have a special place in my heart, because I like how they look and played them in tabletop. I don't play them that much in Total War, because of their limited playstyle.
The factions I play the most are probably Empire, Dark Elves, Woodelves. But in the end I also like Vampire Counts, Chaos, Greensins, Skaven or Beastmen. I just play some factions a little bit more often than others.
- Can we say that Warhammer is the evolution of mp aspect of TW games? Or is it separate direction?
A: That's an interesting question. I really like historical TW games, too. But I'm not sure if new historical games are ever going to be as interesting as TW:WH. I guess we will see once Three Kingdoms gets released.
I would say TW:WH is more or less a seperate direction. But ... maybe we're going to see more TW games with fantasy elements in the future, who knows?
- Over past few years it became obvious, that mp of TWW became the most broadcasted and most prized in tournaments than others games of TW series. In your opinion, why has it happened? Are lots of streamers and big prize pools good for community?
A: I'm not entirely sure why it happened. But I guess WH1 and WH2 were a major success in general (for example compared to Attila or Thrones of Britannia), so there are more players to begin with.
The battles are more interesting to watch, even if you are not that experienced in multiplayer ordon't understand what's going on in detail. Who doesn't like dinosaurs that shoot lazer beams or dragons killing hundreds of enemies with their fiery breath?
One more reason might be that platforms such as Twitch or Youtube became more popular, too.
Are the streamers good for the community? I would say yes, absolutely. Streamers get new players into the game and help beginners to get started.

- What was your path in multiplayer community? Were there any clans you was in?
A: I like to play with a lot of different people. I want to see their approach to the game, you always learn something new.
I regularly play with people from different clans (for example ODM, BBB, CC and so on and so forth).
- and now? are you still all alone?
A: I'll maybe help QSA in the clan war from time to time, because a friend asked me. But I wouldn't really consider me to be part of any clan.
- talking about CC clan, do you feel that multiplayer community lost huge part when Ondjage left the game?
Yes, it still makes me sad. Ondjage is an excellent player and was probably the best player in WH1. I really liked to play with him from time to time. But he mainly plays campaign these days.

- Tell us about a memorable battle for you in a tourney or in simple battle against a random opponent.
A: I didn't win the Chinese Jian Xia cup and only became third place, because I lost to a Dwarf box...
I ask myself why I didn't pick anything to crack a box to this day.
Well, this just sounds sad.

Let me think about something else. There is surely a more interesting example, haha
Okay. Maybe that I won the last game of the Slann Slam tournament with a Slann?
It's difficult to tell. Because the most memorable battles for me, are always the battles I lose. Because I start to think about why I lost afterwards.
- How do you prepare for tournaments? Traning, watching replays, etc?
A: I pray to Nuffle.

Well, when I have time, then I try to play with various people. I sometimes watch replays of other participants, too. So I get an idea how they play. But I guess the most important part is to practice battles.
(Nuffle - Great god of dices)
- There are speculations, that you are preparing your games for exact opponent, and you are winning in the lobby, even before the actual game starts. Is it true?
A: Game knowledge and army selection play an important role in this game. Sometimes the match is already almost won or lost, before the battle even begins.
I would like to emphasize the word ALMOST nonetheless. I often lost battles, although I had clearly the better army, because I made silly mistakes. And I won many, many battles against better armies because my opponent made mistakes or got simply outmanouvered.
One bad decision can make a difference between defeat or victory.

- What is the most important aspect for a player in multiplayer of TWW? maining a faction? builds creation? tactics? micro?
A: Strategy, tactics and micro. All of these parts are important.
You need to have a plan, you need a good idea how to defeat the enemy. Your assumptions about the moves of your opponent need to be correct. You need to adjust this plan during the battle, when something goes wrong or doesn't work like expected. Then you obviously need good enough micro to execute your plan.
- What is your strongest side in mp? Does a skilled player need to be best at everything or he can be best at one side of the game?
A: I for one try to be good at most parts of the game. My approach is to be more of an allrounder.
That being said, there are also players who focus on specific parts of the game and are very good at it. For example Lotus_Moon mainly kites and play elves. Some people play only Vampire Counts and other undead factions. Some only rush factions. I like a more general approach, a bit of everything.
- That i noticed, you and Ondjage were the best at everything, some came close at some point, but none were equal.
Yes, Ondjage played many different factions and used pretty much all kind of strategies, too.
- What is your strongest tactic? Rush, kiting, boxing or something else? Explain why.
A: I think my answer is related to the last question. I like to use as many different strategies as possible. This way my opponent never knows, if I'm going to form a silly noob box, if I have 100% cavalry or if I'm going to kite.
- Put three names of strongest TWW players(beside you). Against whom it was very interesting to play?
A: Ondjage, Crusader, Migsa (Migsa might not be the most well known player, but he managed to surprise me quite often).
- Migsa is known for surprise approach, i like to watch his games.
When he practices, then his chariot micro is quite awesome.
- What is your main advise to begginers?
A: Don't get frustrated. It's not your fault, the game is complicated. It takes a while to get used to Total War games. You will lose over and over again. Don't give up. Once you know what's going on, it will be an awesome experience.

- What factions and units do you await in forecoming dlcs for TWW2?
A: The next DLC is most likely going to be something with Lizardmen and Skaven. I hope we get Waplock Jezzails and the Engine of the Gods. At least they look like decent choices for DLC units to me.
I have no idea what's going to happen afterwards. The release of the Vampire Coast made everything possible.
Dogs of War? Araby? Amazons?

- Creative Assembly announced that next dlc will be Skaven and Lizardmen expansion next day they announced delay for Three Kingdoms
You never know with CA. Maybe it's going to a faction of undead Halflings.
- What do you await from TWW3? Any fantastic dreams?
A: Yes, it's indeed a fantastic dream!
Better multiplayer mechanics. The multiplayer looks more or less like than it looked 10 years ago. Don't get me wrong, TW:WH is a great game. For example why are the unit restrictions in quickbattles still so strange. Why is it possible to draw kite? And so on and so forth. There are many issues.
Also, better support for multiplayer tournaments from CA would be great. But as mentioned earlier, it's more some sort of a dream.
- How do you think, should CA after TWW create any other fantasy universe game? If yes, then what about historical titles and its fans?
A: I would love to see Medieval III, or "Total War: Victoria" or something like that. But games such as Total War: WARHAMMER 40k or Total War: Lord of the Rings, or something like Age of Mythology would be interesting, too.

- Following the tradition, release of Three Kingdoms was delayed. Do you have any suggestions, why it happened? Do you await this game at all?
A: Yes, I'm really looking forward to play Three Kingdoms. I read the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. The campaign gameplay shown by CA looks promising so far as well, they mentioned a lot of interesting new diplomacy features.
- Will you go into multiplayer of Three Kingdoms and its tournaments? In community game sometimes is called "Warhammer for historians". Can it be a try to create a peace between fans of historical titles and fans of TWW?
A: I doubt it. There will always been some people who complain and claim that ONLY fantasy is good, or ONLY historical titles are real Total War games.
I will play Three Kingdoms multiplayer for sure. If I'm going to play tournaments or not, entirely depends on how good the multiplayer is going to be (for example compared to Warhammer).
- In your opinion, what parts must successful TW have? Interesting historical age? Deep LORE and universe? Detailed single campaign or interesting balanced multiplayer?
A: I hate to say that, because I'm a multiplayer enthusiast. But Total War needs a good and interesting campaign to be successful. That being said, I like to play singleplayer, too. It's just that multiplayer is more appealing for me in the long run.
- (Sherl's traditional question) What are three words you first come to mind when the word "Russia"?
A: Vodka, Unicorn artillery, Kislev
and Vodka of course
